John Alvin has designed a multitude of movie posters. The range is quite large from cartoon covers such as for the 1997 film cats don’t dance about cats that want to get into show business to Arnold Swarzneggers Raw Deal action movie. The covers cover quite a repartee as well as styles.

Imagery includes photography such as the cover for Rainman featuring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman in 1988 to futuristic designs for movie covers such as for the movie Alien in 1997.

The choice and style of the imagery exemplifies the movie and plotline sufficiently to make you want to go t expend time and effort to see the movie. In cats don’t dance the characters are colourfully and play fully interdisposed. The characters seem in awe of the main characters who smile and look hopeful in their dream of becoming famous. They seem blissfully and naively determined to not let prejudice such as the movie’s title of “cats don’t dance” get in their way. The main characters expression of hopefulness is not even marred by the formidable bouncer/security card in the background looming over them.

Arnold Swarznegger with his imposing form expresses the title of the movie successfully in the “Raw Deal” movie. As the text states boldly no one gives him a raw deal. The exposed muscles in high definition show why no one in their right mind would want to mess with such a figure of testosterone and manliness.

The pairing of two A list stars both nice to look at with many admirers photographed walking side by side is all the imagery many would need to go and see what these popular actors are up to in their latest movie of the time.

Many people use the term culture as an expression of art - all forms of art plus the traditions of the public. However, to be precise, culture includes much more tha that especially in more diverse societies, it includes the traditions adopted by the different spheres of public life, the different social layers, the distinguished social relations. This is the reason that in many countries with strong justice systems, there have been many traditions still followed - this gives us the idea of law culture - something that sceptics might ignore as non-existing, but what is obvious at a glance.

An appropriate example for law culture would be th UK - a country with strong judiciary, certain legal influence over the world and traditions in the legal world that remain strong since the establishment of the courts of Britain.

One of the most influential elements in the legal culture of the UK are the so called constitutional conventions - since the UK is country with uncodified constition ( or more approapriately said - unwritten constitution), the enforcement of constitutional truths has no practical application since it cannot be brought into the court - judges cannot determine the rules according to something that is not written and announced as constitution. However, the traditions of the legal world have given birth to the constitutional conventions - these are rather cultural habits than enforceable rights of duties since there are no legal consequences if a convention is broken in the law sphere of the UK, such as Paternity Tests.

However, as a part of the UK culture, not following a convention would inevitably lead to public critisism - imagine the Queen would not give the royal assent to the party that has won the elections (as a matter of convention she must give royal assent to whosoever has won the majority of seats in the house of commons) - she has no legal duty to give it to that party, but the public has choosen, the queen would be put under significant pressure, people might even want an establishment of a republic.

This is why in the legal world certain cultural habits can be observed - in countries like the UK, with strong judiciary and governing laws, the law culture plays a significant part of the governing traditions and the social relations in the public.

There’s a lot of good deals to be had if you tread wisely with down loadable music membership sites. With all the competition for the sale of similar products loads of companies online are having to attract customers with their own special “one off”deals.

Some companies offer your first downloads of the month free up to fifty of them even plus there’s no need to commit to being a member and you can always cancel after they tell you. This is a great deal if you want to check them out and see if they have your sort of music plus get some freebies to fill up that storage space on your computer that is currently going wanting.

Best way to do this is to right away is to choose the fifty free titles download them, save them and then say thanks very much and cancel the account. Now why would you cancel the account when you might want to join and you have a month to think about it anyway? Aah. Because this is where they get ya. You see if you don’t remember the trillions (seems like anyway sometimes) of sites you’ve browsed that month and your not a whiz at organizing your bookmarks or manually sorting through them for a few hours then chances are you could forget you ever signed up and get charged a months fee!

Usually the automated months fee is not the cheapest as yours truly found out after it was debited from my account. What to do next. Well use up all the credits you’ve just paid for first of course and then delete the account. Now that should teach you to remember to do it after getting any other freebies. The smarter option is only to check out the freebies with no bank details needed.

Bob</placename /> Peak</placename /></place /> has many movie posters and designs for music and film pvc banners to his credit. One that I like is a poster for the movie “Star Trek” which still has a cult following today. The movie poster sets the pace for the movie and lets you know what to expect. It creates a surreal ambiance even with the older methods of graphics available at the time. The imagery creates the atmosphere of what is to come simply but successfully.

This 1979 poster has a tagline at the upper left hand corner stating to the viewers what is to come. It reads “The human adventure is just beginning.” Thus letting the viewers know that when they watch this movie they are in for some mind boggling stuff.

The Starship enterprise captain looks upwards, skywards to the stars accompanied by the faces of his female right hand and of course the famous pointy eyebrow and ears character Doctor Spock who looks on. All three faces are caught up in a rainbow coloured beam. Remember the famous command to “Beam me up, Scotty?”

Unlike the white (on our screens anyway) beam that was seen when the beam was ready to take the characters to all manner of alien worlds the poster version has an array of reds, orange, greens and blues with a central yellow colour. This could be reminiscent of the probability that the famous beam was actually an ultra violet beam with an array of colours not seen by the naked eye.

The stars out in space provide a back drop to all this space alien activity and create the atmosphere of the space sky together with an image of the famous starship enterprise traveling through the unknown perimeters of outer space on its voyage. Beams of light emanate from the space ship to illuminate its way. These same type of beams seem to illuminate the movies title that introduces the long awaited for by treky fans the world over “StarTrek the motion picture”

It is widely touted that Vincent van Gogh never sold a painting during his lifetime. Whether this is actually true or not does not alter the fact that although he died almost unknown to world he has gone on, in little over 100 years, to become one of the most famous painters in history. His works now fetch astronomical sums leaving them outside the grasp of all but the very wealthy.
If you could go back now to the 19th Century you’d snap up a few of his works no doubt but as that is not likely to be happening any time soon you may want to consider artists currently alive and with growing reputations. Artists who have suc a gift that in due course they may be held in such high esteem. One such artist is the English painter Charlie Mackesy.
Originally a cartoonist, don’t be expecting to see any of his stuff on pop up display stands at the comic book store. His works came to the attention of a wider audience when his ability to capture movement and light was noted and presented in London to an enthusiastic audience. His religious paintings and drawings were such as to leave most people that saw them genuinely moved and it was this ability to touch people emotionally through his art that lead to numerous important commissions for individuals and churches.
With his work now displayed alongside those of Prince Charles, Nelson Mandela and others in London and beyond and with buyers such as Sting and Whoopi Goldberg quietly purchasing his works it may be a very wise time to consider looking more deeply at his art. With his works now commanding 5 figure sums and rising it may in fact be the last time they are available to the general public at what would be considered still ’reasonable’.
To see Charlie’s work see his website here: http://www.charliemackesy.com/

You walk in to the shop and see the clip-frames. They are cheap, easy to put your art in, and you think they look ok: someone will definitely want to buy your amazing art work if you get a few of them.

So there it is; you go home and put all your paintings in them and guess what? You were right! They look stunning. On the day of the exhibition you are sure that your paintings will sell. How could they fail not to?

Except they don’t sell, oh no. Sadly, the people who visited the exhibition were attracted more towards the paintings which were framed properly. You can’t make sense of it, of course, shouldn’t the work speak for itself?

Here’s the sad truth: many amateur artists think it is ok to sell their work in clip-frames. But it’s not, art buyers and top interior designers will not even consider buying for clients if the work is not properly framed. And they are a very large part of the market. If you are going to be considered a proper artist then you will need to splash out on some proper frames – clip frames don’t cut it for several reasons. For one thing flies get stuck inside them and will ruin your art work, and for a second thing no gallery will exhibit your work in a clip frame. So, if the gallery is accepting your work like that then you need to know that something is wrong.

And framing, although not cheap, doesn’t have to be so expensive. Most galleries want your business so they will be willing to try and help you out in any way possible. The key is to ask. If you see a moulding that looks great but you know you can’t afford, ask if they have anything similar. Most galleries stock several types of the frame in different materials, which means that whatever your budget you can get something that not only looks good but that will not break the bank.

People make history - fact - today future history is being made by Brown, Gates, Obama and Osama. In the past it was made by eight Henrys, Gladstone, Drake etc.

Today we can see the future history makers in our livingrooms via the TV. Historical characters we cannot. However the artists of the past can bring these people to us and the best place to look into the eyes of these people is at the National Portrait Gallery. Here you will see poeple who changed the world and I advise all who go to look into thier eyes. An artist concentrates on the eyes (ref the Mona Lisa) as they are, as has often been quoted, “the windows to the soul”.

The most striking portrait is the most famous one of Henry VIII - the one with him standing powerfully, fisted hands on hips, huge barrel chest, legs firmly set and muscular. Look at those eyes! As a young man he was handsome and athletic, perhaps the most accomplished prince in christendom - 6’2″tall (the average man of the time stood about 5’7″) a great sportsman, an artist (he played many instruments and wrote beautiful music, though not “Greensleeves”, which dates from about 30 years after his death) and he could speak five languages. However by the time that this portrait was painted he had changed - both in physique and character.

He had by now alientated most of christendom by making himself head of the church in england in order to obtain his divorce from Catherine of Aragon, to whom he showed little respect and less kindness.

Look into his eyes and you see this new character - it demonstrates meanness and calousness and selfishness.

The eyes have it - a dangerous man to know!

Turner prize winning British painter Chris Ofili will have his work on display at Tate Britain, an exhibition that will run until 16 May. Highlighting Ofili’s experimental, cross-media artwork, Tate Britain will feature some of the artist’s greatest works, including his two 1996 works, Afrodizzia and The Holy Virgin Mary, as well as Blossom (1997) and No Woman No Cry (1998). These pieces highlight his ability to blend hip-hop culture with traditional folklore and spirituality; a truly rare skill.

Chris Ofili managed to become a member of the Young British Artists (YBA), and is one of the few representatives of the African/Caribbean art style. His work is noted for its ability to capture his Nigerian heritage. His work is also noted for his ability to cross media, including the use of such rare media as glitter, resin, and map pins.

Tate Britain’s exhibition will showcase the Upper Room 199-2002, with 13 works from the artist. This dark, religious hall will house the artist’s canvases depicted rhesus macaque monkeys, which are individually lit to bring out their true power and intense colours.

The other exhibition, From London to Trinidad, will showcase Chris Ofili’s creations from when he lived in the Caribbean nation. Not only does his work from this period (after 2005) show his love for the landscape, but also capture sensual and Biblical images in contrast.
Ever since I was about fourteen years old I have wanted to be an artist. However, it took me until I was around seventeen to actually take my dream seriously and start learning what I needed to learn. I believe that many of the greatest artists were not just talented, which is of course a requirement, but they were also passionate about art and ready to learn about art so as to improve.

One of the most important things I had to learn was the human anatomy. Artists such as Frank Frazetta and Brom (both working in the Fantasy Art field) are masters of anatomy and can paint the human form perfectly in any pose and position and from any angle. That is more than talent, that ability came from the patience and determination to learn the anatomy and study it in detail.

The best way to learn the anatomy is to find a good book on anatomy and copy the images, taking your time to try and make an accurate copy. Once you have flipped through the pages and copied the anatomy you will have already gained significant knowledge in how the body is shaped, how it is proportioned and how the muscles move and react.

The next best thing is to find an artist you really love and to copy their paintings and sketches also. This way you will learn how to draw the body from different angles and in different poses and it will all be getting stored in your memory every time your draw. Of course, you cannot claim these copies as your own and they must be noted as studies to avoid copyright infringement.

Other than learning the anatomy and doing what is described above, the single best way to improve as an artist is to draw, draw, draw every single day. It takes determination and a lot of patience, but I know it will be worth it in the end.

Got paid for that last freelance job that I did, you all know what that means, it’s about time to hit the shops and pick up that new pair of newton running shoes that I have been waiting to get. Steve, are you up for a little bit of shopping this weekend?
